Designing MEMS In - How to Engage the Supply Chain

This one-day pre-conference symposium will give attendees an inside look into the MEMS industry and how to “design MEMS inside” their products. With attractive benefits that include the ability to add features or enhance performance at lower cost, weight and size, while meeting the cost requirements in heterogeneous embedded systems—from thermostats to mobile phones to automobiles to laundry machines—MEMS is seemingly everywhere.

MEMS technology has dominated the automotive industry for decades, and now can be seen in every smartphone, tablet and PDA. While in many ways MEMS is a mature industry, it is still incredibly diverse. There are many different markets for current and potential growth including consumer, communications, wireless, medical/health/wellness, industrial (including agriculture and white goods) as well as its mainstay, automotive. Clearly outpacing the growth of the semiconductor industry, MEMS has seen double digit growth for the past five years and is primed to grow from an estimated $10B in 2012, to almost $23B by 2017 (according to Yole Development's latest 2013 forecast).

What is unique about the MEMS industry is its supply chain built around supporting the manufacturing and commercialization of MEMS. It’s an amazingly rich ecosystem including device manufacturers with captive fabs, fablite companies and an increasing number of fabless companies. There already exists a very strong foundry infrastructure with a diversity of fabrication offerings – from CMOS/MEMS hybrids to pure-play MEMS foundries. Furthermore, there is an impressive list of materials and equipment suppliers, software designers and consultants to provide a very robust supply chain; all potential partners for integrators and end-users looking to MEMS as their “special sauce.”

There is still a great deal of opportunity for entrepreneurism and innovation in how MEMS are designed, where they are used, and how they can transform existing applications and create new markets. However, when picking “which MEMS” to design into your product it is not yet truly a plug and play. Sure you can buy off the shelf, but if you are trying to remain competitive – why would you? Therefore, you must pick your platform wisely. You need to understand the capabilities for applications, costs, volume manufacturing needs and platform expandability to best maximize the return on your MEMS investment.

Where is the industry heading and what are the future possibilities as MEMS enables a truly smart Internet of Things? Come join us for MIG’s Pre-Conference Symposium on “designing MEMS in” so you can maximize the MEMS ecosystem and engage with your partners who are dedicated to you and your products’ success.

Exhibit in the MEMS Pavilion

The fast growing demand for and increased adoption of consumer and mobile device applications has generated strong sales for MEMS and in turn, has market analysts expecting double-digit growth for the next several years. MEMS Pavilion is a place to explore current MEMS devices, find new ways to apply existing MEMS devices, and learn from leading players in the MEMS space.
