Markus Buhlmann, Head of Unit, Chassis Electronics, Vehicle Dynamics/Software, Audi AG

Markus Buhlmann is the Head of Unit, Chassis Electronics, and Vehicle Dynamics/Software for Audi AG.  Buhlmann studied Electronics at the Technical University of Munich. Buhlmann began his career in 1984 as Assistant Engineer for Data Techniques at Siemens and later Technical Customer Service in the area of public communication systems before leaving in 1992, when he joined Audi.

He has held numerous positions within Audi including technical customer service, and technical development, which included including in-vehicle networks for power train and chassis (CAN-network).  From 2000 to 2006 he worked as a project manager for “Time triggered architecture” (TTA), in-vehicle networks, electronic architecture, software development process, and software architecture. From 2006 to 2010 he was Project Manager for software in a torque vectoring systems. Most recently Buhlmann was team coordinator for ECU’s, Vertical dynamics, All wheel systems, Inertial sensor systems and Technical development of Audi (chassis) until he was promoted to his current position.


Carmelo Papa, Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager, Industrial & Multisegment Sector, STMicroelectronics

Carmelo Papa is Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager of STMicroelectronics’ Industrial & Multisegment Sector, which comprises power and analog devices, microcontrollers, MEMS, as well as discrete, special non-volatile memory and smart card products, and has held this position since January 2007. He is a member of the Corporate Strategic Committee.

Papa started his professional career with ICL (International Computers Limited). He joined SGS Microelettronica, a predecessor company to STMicroelectronics, in 1983, and three years later was promoted to Director of Product Marketing and Customer Service for Transistors and Standard ICs. In 2000, Papa was appointed Corporate Vice President, Emerging Markets, comprising Africa and the Middle East, India, Latin America, Russia and the Eastern European countries. In 2005, he was chosen to lead the Micro, Power and Analog Group, serving a broad customer base in a large variety of applications with a special emphasis on the industrial segment.

In October 2010, Papa was appointed Chairman of the European Platform on Smart Systems, an industry-driven initiative focused on innovation in nanotechnologies and smart systems integration.

Carmelo Papa was born in Castiglione di Sicilia, Italy, in 1949, and graduated with a degree in Nuclear Physics from the University of Catania.


Henry Baltes, Professor Emeritus, ETH Zürich, Micro and Nanosystems

Henry Baltes is Professor Emeritus of ETH Zurich affiliated with Micro and Nanosystems at the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering.

He was Professor of Physical Electronics at ETH Zurich and Director of the Physical Electronics Laboratory from 1988 to 2006. In 2004 and 2005 he was on leave from his teaching and research duties and acted as start-up Chair of the future Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of ETH Zurich located at Basel.

Prof. Baltes is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Member of the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE and the Search Committee of the Koerber Foundation. He is a co-founder of the spin-off company SENSIRION AG. He is on the Advisory Committee of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), University of Freiburg, Germany, and the Board of the Western Watersheds Climate Research Collaborative (WWCRC), Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

Among his awards are the Koerber European Science Award, the Wilhelm Exner Medal of the Austrian Trade Association, and the degrees of Doctor of Electrical Engineering (honoris causa) of University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, Doctor of Electronic Engineering (ad honorem) of Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy, Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) of University of Freiburg, Germany, and Doctor of Science (Engineering) honoris causa of University College London. He also won the Swiss Technology Award and the IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award.

In 2002/03 he was Visiting Scientist at the Ritsumeikan University, the University of Bologna, and the University of Freiburg. In 1996 he was Visiting Professor at Stanford University and the University of Waterloo. From 1991 to 1995 he was the Program Director of the Swiss National Priority Program LESIT for power electronics, systems, and information technology.

From 1983 to 1988 he held the Henry Marshall Tory Chair in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He also was acting President of the Alberta Microelectronic Centre and a co-founder and Director of LSI Logic Corporation of Canada. From 1973 to 1982 he worked for a Swiss company and taught at EPF Lausanne. He received the degree of Doctor of Natural Science of ETH Zurich in Physics in 1971.

Chris Baten, Program Manager, 3D Ambulatory Motion Analysis, Roessingh Research and Development, Roessingh Research and Development

Chris Baten is Manager of 3D Ambulatory Motion Analysis at the independent applied rehabilitation research facility Roessingh Research and Development (RRD) in Enschede, Netherlands; affiliated with the University of Twente in Enschede, Netherlands.

Since the early nineties Baten has been interested in the research and development of applications of ambulatory 3D analysis of movement, after a career start in EMG research in a rehabilitation center context. His work in this area was motivated by perceived clinical needs for practical instruments for assessment of motor performance, both in a supervised situation (clinical evaluation) or unsupervised situation (at home, at work, in sports).

Baten initiated the Amber, Ambulab, FreeMotion and current Fusion research consortia and participate(s/ed) in many international projects touching all aspects from fundamental technology to practical and organizational aspects, all regarded in the light of getting closer to the final goal of a reliable large-scale routine application.

Baten was president of the ‘Technical section on 3D analysis of human movement’ of the ISB, chairing the sections 3DMA-08 meeting, opening up the traditional camera dominated motion lab community for alternative emerging technologies like marker-less video based and motion sensor based motion analysis. Baten received a BS and MsC in electrical and biomedical engineering from University of Twente.

Francois Berger, M.D.-Ph.D., Director, CEA Leti - Clinatec

François Berger, MD, PhD has a dual scientific and clinical education in the field of neurology, oncology and molecular and cell biology. Since 2004 he has coordinated the Brain Nanomedicine Group in INSERM U 836. He continues to have a dual clinical and research activity as professor of cell biology and neuro-oncology. He develops a translational research activity, trying to validate innovative technologies at the preclinical/clinical level in close collaboration with CEA-LETI micro-nanotechnology centre.

At the interface between technology and medicine, Dr. Berger is the director of Clinatec, a clinical-preclinical research facility devoted to the validation of new implanted micro-nanotechnologies at the human brain interface associating biological and imaging facilities to provide the best environment for the first preclinical and human proof of concept. Located at MINATEC in Grenoble, Clinatec was formed by CEA-Leti, Grenoble University Hospital and Joseph Fourier University.

Jo De Boeck, Ph.D., CTO, imec

Jo De Boeck received his engineering degree in 1986 and his PhD degree in 1991 from the University of Leuven. Since 1991 he is a staff member of imec (Leuven). He has been a NATO Science Fellow at Bellcore (USA, 1991-92) and AST-fellow in the Joint Research Center for Atom Technology (Japan,1998). In his research career, he has been leading activities on integration of novel materials at device level and new functionalities at systems level. In 2003 he became Associate Vice President at IMEC for the Microsystems division and in 2005 started Holst Centre (Eindhoven) and became CEO of IMEC-Netherlands. From 2009 to 2011 he headed imec’s unit Smart Systems and Energy Technology as Senior Vice President in the imec group.  Late 2011 he has been appointed CTO of imec corporate. He is professor at the KU Leuven and visiting professor at the TU Delft.

Laurent Chiesi, Ph.D., R&D Senior Engineer in Microsystems, Schneider Electric

Laurent Chiesi is a Senior Microsystems Engineer in Schneider Electric Strategy and Innovation Department in Grenoble, France. He received his Ph.D. in Microsystems in 1996 from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) before working as post doctoral research fellow at the same institute. He gained many years of experience on MEMS design and fabrication process in a start-up company called PHS MEMS.

Thereafter he joined Schneider Electric Innovation Department in 2004 to work on the development of a new MEMS electrical switch. He is currently in charge of the development of new ultra-low power gas sensors for building applications.

Richard Dixon, Ph.D., Principle Analyst, MEMS & Sensors, IHS iSuppli

Richard Dixon is a principal analyst for MEMS and author of more than 50 MEMS-related consulting and market research studies. He is a world-renowned expert on automotive MEMS and magnetic sensors used in safety, powertrain and body applications. Along with supporting the overall activities of the MEMS and sensors group, his responsibilities include the development of databases that forecast the markets for more than 20 types of silicon-based sensors in more than 100 automotive applications. In addition, he has supported organizations with future scenarios for sensors in cars and has supported many custom projects for companies in the automotive supply chain.

In his prior post at WTC, Dixon was a senior MEMS analyst where he led research on physical sensors and was the co-author of the NEXUS Task Force Report for MEMS and Microsystems 2005-2009. He has also led commercialization and road-mapping activities on European Commission-funded technology projects, including detailed MEMS chip cost analysis studies.

Dixon worked previously as a journalist in the compound semiconductor industry and has five years of experience as a technology transfer professional at RTI International, where he provided business and market intelligence for early stage technologies.

Dixon graduated from North Kent University with a degree in materials science and earned a doctorate from Surrey University in semiconductor characterization.

He speaks English and German.


Steven Dwyer, Vice President and General Manager, EV Group

Steven Dwyer is the Vice President and General Manager of North American operations for EV Group (EVG), a world-leading manufacturer of equipment for the semiconductor, MEMS and nanotechnology industries. In this role, he is responsible for driving the company’s sales efforts in North America—ultimately boosting the company’s overall growth and profitability in this key region. Part of Mr. Dwyer’s charter is to also forge closer ties with key customers, partners and suppliers. He has headed EVG’s U.S. operations (headquartered in Tempe, Ariz.) since 2002.

In addition to his responsibilities with EVG, he is a member of the governing counsel of the MEMS Industry Group (MIG)—an industry association dedicated to greater commercialization of the MEMS and microstructure industries.  He is also on the governing board of the Flexible Display Center (FDC) at Arizona State University (ASU)—a university/industry/government collaborative venture designed to commercialize full-color flexible display technology. Lastly, he is a member of the advisory counsel for the Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation (MANCEF) where he is actively involved in its programs, such as its COMS conferences. He is the co-author of numerous technical papers related to MEMs and semiconductor processing.

Mr. Dwyer has extensive background in management, operations and sales. Prior to joining EVG, he was with Harbison Walker Refractories (now a part of RHI Refractories) where he was responsible for the company’s Asia-Pacific sales efforts. Mr. Dwyer started his career with BHP Refractories in 1992.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business with an emphasis in marketing and management from the University of New England in 1991, NSW, Australia.

Jean-Christophe Eloy, Founder and President, Yole Développement

JC Eloy directly manages the international development and strategic orientations of the company and is in charge of the MEMS activities at Yole Développement. He has performed more than 100 actions or analyses for the different customers of Yole Développement (from materials and equipment to devices and modules) as well as services for the financial investors (e.g M&A, evaluation of business plan).

For six years, Jean-Christophe Eloy has been the manager of the marketing department of LETI (France), the applied R&D organization involved in the semiconductor, MEMS and instrumentation fields (1000 researchers). He created the semiconductor practice at Ernst & Young in Europe and worked as senior manager in charge of the development of European activities. In addition to his activities at Yole Développement, he is on the boards of several companies, in Europe and North America.

Stefan Finkbeiner, Ph.D., CEO, Akustica

Stefan Finkbeiner brings to Akustica over 20 years of experience in engineering, manufacturing, and marketing of high volume, high quality sensors.   Most recently a Vice President of Engineering for sensors at Robert Bosch GmbH with responsibility for automotive sensors and packaging of sensors, he previously held other senior positions at Bosch including Director of Corporate Research in microsystems technology where he was focused on future sensor products and technologies.  He started his career at Bosch working in sensor engineering and sensor manufacturing for the Automotive Electronics division and moved on to become Section Manager for sensor technologies and then Director of Marketing for sensors.

Stefan Finkbeiner has a Ph.D. in solid state physics from the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany.

Burkhard Habbe, VP Business Development, Micropelt GmbH

Burkhard Habbe is Vice President Business Development at Micropelt, a thin film thermoelectric chip maker located in Freiburg, Germany, after he earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Munich’s Technical University. Burkhard has held various senior positions in sales, marketing and business development - always related to cutting edge technologies such as robotics, videoconferencing (founding a nation-wide rental service),  hybrid microelectronics and machine vision. Since joining Micropelt in 2007 Burkhard is a passionate promoter of thermal energy harvesting using Micropelt’s thin film thermoelectrics, the convergence of ultra-low power wireless technologies, and the game-changing concept of ubiquitous wireless sensing.

J.W. (Hans) Hofstraat, Ph.D., Vice President, Philips Research Healthcare Strategic Partnerships, Philips Research Laboratories

Hans Hofstraat is Vice President in Philips Research, globally responsible for partnerships and Open Innovation for Philips' healthcare research program.

Hans Hofstraat completed his thesis (Free University, Amsterdam) and post-doctoral work (ETH, Zürich, Switzerland) on low-temperature high-resolution luminescence spectroscopy.

After career steps in marine environmental research (with the Dutch Public Works Department in The Hague and Rijswijk) and in the chemical industry (with Akzo Nobel Central Research, Arnhem, The Netherlands), he joined Philips Research in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) in 1998. From 1998-2008 he also was part-time professor in the Institute of Molecular Chemistry at the University of Amsterdam. Since January 15, 2007 he is responsible for Healthcare Strategic Partnerships in Philips Research worldwide, actively driving the Open Innovation approach to Philips' Healthcare research program. Next to his work at Philips he holds several positions in (inter)national advisory bodies. Amongst others he is Member of the Advisory Group of the European FP7 research program on Nanosciences, Nanotechnologies, Materials and New Production Technologies (NMP), Member of the Advisory Board of EATRIS, the European Advanced Translational Infrastructure for Medicine (part of the European Science Foundation's Research Infrastructure initiative), and Member of the External Advisory Board of the ERA-Net EuroNanoMed. He is founder and chairman of the Advisory Board of the Dutch public-private partnership CTMM, the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine, and member of the Dutch Council for Health Research. Hofstraat authored about 190 publications with an h-index of 32. He holds 9 granted US patents, and a total of over 80 patent (application)s in various countries from 25 patent families in various fields.

Hannu Laatikainen, Executive Vice President, Transportation Business,
VTI Technologies

Hannu Laatikainen serves as Executive Vice President, Transportation Business, for VTI Technologies Oy. Previously, Mr. Laatikainen served as Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Strategic Development. From 1995-2002, Mr. Laatikainen was the Managing Director and Head Sales of Marketing for VTI Hamlin Oy/Breed Technologies Oy. From 1983-1991, he held various managerial posititions and served as Director of Sales and Marketing for Vaisala Technologies Oy.

Mr. Laatikainen is involved in several professional organizations, such as EPoSS, Europides - EUREKA Cluster Project promoting Smart Systems, Automotive and Microsystems groups of ZVEI (Central Association of German Electrical and Electronics Industry), and serves as a member of the board at Pegasor Oy and TIVIT Oy, Finnish ICT SHOK.

Terho Lahtinen, Product Concepts & Innovation Manager, Suunto

Terho Lahtinen has over 10 years of experience at Suunto with a large variety of sports monitoring and analysis products such as altimeter and GPS watches, heart rate monitors, and accelerometer based sports monitors. As product manager and category business manager, he has built a deep understanding of the use and applications of electronic devices in sports and leisure. Currently leading new product concept development at Suunto, he brings also his own background in outdoor sports into building new, attractive products and solutions to active sports participants for measuring and documenting their activities.

Terho Lahtinen got his MSc degree from Helsinki University of Technology in 1997 and studied material physics, international marketing, and design business management.

Jiri Marek, Ph.D., Senior Vice President of Engineering Sensors, Automotive Electronics Division, Robert Bosch GmbH

Since December 2003 Jiri Marek is Senior Vice President of Engineering Sensors at Bosch, Automotive Electronics Division, responsible for the MEMS activities at Bosch.

From 1990 until 1999 he was responsible for the Sensor Technology Center; in November 1999 he became Vice President Engineering of Restraint Systems and Sensors.

Jiri Marek studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany and Stanford University, USA. In 1983 he received his Ph. D. from University of Stuttgart and Max-Planck-Institut, Stuttgart for his work on the analysis of grain boundaries in large grain polycrystalline solar cells. After a post doctoral fellowship with IBM Research, San José, California he was a development engineer with Hewlett-Packard, Optical Communication Division. In 1986 he started his work with Robert Bosch GmbH in Reutlingen, Germany.

Frédéric Neftel, MD, President & CEO, Debiotech SA

Frederic Neftel got his medical degree from Paris - Necker University Hospital.
He started his career with Debiopharm SA on the clinical development of Somatostatin analogues, in collaboration with Nobel Price Andrew Schally, and on the development and licensing of novel pharmaceutical drug compounds.

In 1990 he founded Debiotech SA in Lausanne Switzerland, where he presently is acting as President and CEO, which specializes in the research and development of innovative Medical Devices and Drug Delivery Systems. For over 20 years, Debiotech has concluded over 50 licensing deals with leading companies in the Pharmaceutical and Device field and holds over 500 patents worldwide. The company is particularly active in micro- and nano-technologies for implantable and external drug delivery systems, used in areas such as diabetes therapy, renal failure, cardiovascular stents, cancer and pain treatments, vaccines and diagnostics. In 2004 he founded “Swiss Medical Care SA,” a spin-off company of Debiotech, which is developing and marketing novel contrast media injector systems for CT imaging and diagnostics and which has been acquired recently by the Bracco Imaging Group.

Marc Osajda, Global Automotive Strategy Manager, Freescale Semiconductor

Marc Osajda is Global Automotive Strategy Manager for Freescale Semiconductor in Munich, Germany.  He is responsible for market strategy and analysis of the automotive semiconductor market with a specific focus on Sensors.

Marc Osajda joined Motorola's European semiconductor business in 1992 as a design engineer. From 1995 to 2004, Marc was involved with the European Automotive industry, respectively as Sensor application engineer, Sensor Marketing Engineer and Program Manager

In 2005 Marc Osajda moved to Munich and joined Freescale Semiconductor Automotive Global Sales & Marketing organization. He is now in charge of global automotive strategy.

Marc Osajda holds an engineering degree in mechanics and electronics from the French “Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Arts et Métiers” (ENSAM).

Sauli Palo, Principal Specialist, Component Quality and Technology, Nokia Corporation

Sauli Palo has more than 35 years of experience in semiconductor technology and quality management at Nokia and its subsidiaries. His current area of expertise is sensor and optical components as used in mobile applications. Prior to this Sauli worked with ASICs and their supply chains, and has overall conducted more than 200 supplier and process assessments worldwide.

In his previous roles Sauli worked 10 years at Micronas Oy, a Finnish semiconductor company, as quality manager and project manager to acquire an ISO9001 certification. Component level testing, characterization, qualification, burn-in and yield improvement were the focus of activities. Modeling of component field reliability and physical failure analysis were also important tasks.

Sauli has a M.Sc. degree from the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. His diploma work dealt with failure mechanisms of semiconductor components.

Nico de Rooj, Ph.D., VP Microsystems Technology, CSEM

Nico de Rooij is Vice-President of the CSEM S.A., where he is head of the Microsystems Technology Division. He is also director of the Institute of Microengineering of EPFL’s School Of Engineering (EPFL STI IMT) as well as Head of the Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Laboratory (SAMLAB) of the same Institute. His research activities include the design, micro fabrication and application of miniaturized silicon based sensors, actuators, and microsystems. He authored and co-authored over 300 published journal papers.

Nico de Rooij was elected Fellow of the IEEE in 2002 and Fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK) in 2004. In 2007 he was the recipient of the IEEE Jun-Ichi Nishizawa Gold Medal "for pioneering contributions to microsystem technology and effective transfer into industrial products and applications".

Michel Rosa, Ph.D., MEMS Global Product Manager, 200mm Equipment Product Group, Applied Materials, Inc.

Mike Rosa is the MEMS Global Product Manager within the 200mm Equipment Products Group (EPG) at Applied Materials, Inc. with over 15 years of technology-focused product and business development experience. Mike brings to his role significant MEMS domain knowledge and device-level expertise having developed MEMS based solutions for xerography and ink-jet printing, photonics and optical switching, and Laser/VCSEL integration and packaging.

Prior to joining Applied Materials Mike held various contributor-level and senior-leadership positions within the U.S. and Australia. He has worked for technology-focused companies that included Xerox Corporation, Australian Microelectronics Centre (AMC) and National ICT Australia (NICTA). Mike’s technical qualifications also include B. Eng (Hons) and Ph.D. degrees in Microelectronics Engineering and MEMS from Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In addition to his technical qualifications, Mike has an MBA with specializations in Marketing, Business Strategy and Entrepreneurship. Mike has authored 15 journal and conference publications, and holds over 25 U.S. patents concerning various applications of MEMS and Microsystems technology.

Thomas Scheiter, Ph.D., Global Owner of Microsystems R&D, Siemens

Thomas Scheiter is the Global Technology Field Leader of Microsytems at Siemens AG. Before his current position, he was the Department Head of Security Controller Development at Infineon’s Chip Card Division from 2002-2008. His previous positions include Project Manager of Biometrics (Fingertip) at Siemens HL respectively Infineon, Chip Card Division and Group Leader of Microsystems at Siemens ZT. Thomas Scheiter earned his degree in Electronic Engineering and Ph.D.  (Thesis: Microsystems Integration) from the Techn. Univ. Munich.

Bernhard Schmid, Manager Sensor System & Technology Center Chassis & Safety Division, Continental Teves AG & Co.

Since the beginning of 2010 Bernhard Schmid is heading the department "Sensor Systems & Technology" in the business unit Sensorics at Continental in Frankfurt / Main. In this function he is responsible for the pre-development of all kind of automotive sensors.

His professional career started Bernhard Schmid as a radio electronics trainee. Until 1995 he studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and conducted his diploma thesis until 1996 at the Universite de Montreal, Canada in the field of microsystems technology and gas sensors. From 1997 to 2002 he worked as a development engineer and later as the head of process and technology engineering in the wafer manufacturing of MEMS airbag sensors at Temic microelectronics in Munich / Ottobrunn. By 2009, Mr. Schmid was in charge of the development of diverse MEMS inertial sensor principles for active and passive safety systems in the R & D segment of the business unit Sensorics at Continental in Frankfurt / Main.

Kai Seikku, President, Okmetic

Kai Seikku is responsible for the operations, management and strategic direction of Okmetic Group, the 8th largest silicon wafer supplier globally, and a world-leading supplier of silicon materials for advanced sensor applications. Seikku has been Okmetic’s President since the beginning of 2010.

Seikku has a fairly extensive background of working with technology companies as he has made a long career in strategy consulting, marketing and general management. Before joining Okmetic Seikku was the CEO of HKScan Corporation, a large processed food company. Seikku holds a M.Sc. degree in Economics from the Helsinki School of Economics.

Per Slycke, CTO and Founder, Xsens

Per Slycke is responsible for the research and new product development, product marketing and new business development of Xsens. Per Slycke co-founded Xsens in 2000. He has more than 10 years experience in MEMS inertial sensor technology, sensor fusion, and related applications and is co-author of several publications and patents on these topics. Mr. Slycke holds a MSc degree in Physics from the University of Twente.

Dave Thomas, Ph.D., Marketing Director, Etch Products, SPTS Technologies

Dave Thomas is Marketing Director for SPTS Technologies’ Etch products.  He has responsibility for SPTS’s Etch product line including all aspects of Marketing, product positioning & the provision of support to the World-wide Sales team.

After completing his BSc in Chemistry in 1983 at Leeds University, UK, he went on to the University of Bristol, UK, where he gained an MSc in Surface Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Plasma Etching & Deposition.  Thomas has since worked for Philips Components on silicon wafer processing and as a Principal Research Engineer for Nortel Networks on various aspects of the design, manufacturing and testing of laser diodes.  He joined SPTS in 1994 as a Process Engineer in PVD and became PVD Technology Manager for Japan in 1996.  He took up his first position in Marketing as Product Marketing Manager for Etch in 1997 and was promoted to Marketing Director in 2008.  He has presented widely on Etch and PVD technologies and is an author of over 30 technical articles and papers.

Maurus Tschirky, Product Manager, ACUTRONIC

Maurus Tschirky is currently the Product Manager at ACUTRONIC Switzerland Ltd. Previously; he was a Sales Engineer for ACUTRONIC Switzerland Ltd. Mr. Tschirky has held various positions in Control Design and Drive Systems at ABB, BU Printing, Baden, Switzerland; and System Engineering, Project Mgmt and Product Mgmt at Unaxis/Oerlikon Wafer Processing (PVD).

Mr. Tschirky has a Bachelor’s in Electronics, Measurement and Control Design from University of Applied Sciences in Buchs, Switzerland and a Masters of Advanced Studies in International Marketing from Hochschule für Technik, Zürich, Switzerland.

Andre Van Geelen, Ph.D., Executive Vice President & General Manager, EPCOS Netherlands B.V.

André van Geelen studied Chemistry and Solid State Physics at the University of Nijmegen and obtained his Masters in 1990. He obtained a Ph.D. on III-V solar cells and epitaxial lift-off technology in 1997. André started his professional career at Philips Research Laboratories Eindhoven in 1995 with epitaxial crystal growth and device design of telecommunication. From 1998 onwards he headed the epitaxial crystal growth group of JDS-Uniphase in Eindhoven. In 2002 he joined the start-up company ThreeFive Photonics as Director Engineering were he was in charge of development and engineering of highly integrated optoelectronic products. In this function he shaped the fabless business model of the company and participated in the acquisition of venture funding. End of 2003 he decided to join the Innovation Centre for RF of Philips Semiconductors Nijmegen (later NXP) as Manager Device and Module Technology. With projects of his team he contributed to business successes in the areas of cellular base stations, CATV amplifiers, front-ends and power amplifiers and an overall yearly business of 120M€. In 2007, still within NXP, he defined the business plan for TuneIC and led a series A venture fund round. The TuneIC plan explored RF-MEMS technology and tunable RF systems. Early 2008, the TuneIC team joined EPCOS, headquartered in Munich and André became executive vice president and general manager of EPCOS Netherlands. EPCOS joined forces with TDK in 2009. The focus of EPCOS Netherlands is antenna tuners for handsets and mobile applications. The first antenna tuner products are currently manufactured in volume.
