Carnegie Mellon University Institute for Complex Engineering Systems (ICES)

The goal of the Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES) is to continually generate a vibrant nurturing environment where high-impact research in engineered materials, devices, processes and systems is conceived, seeded and matured to achieve national and international recognition. In ICES’s structure and mission, we adopt the institute vision as an academic organizational and cultural model which effectively stimulates and fosters multidisciplinary engineering research and collaboration between students, faculty, staff, industry and government agencies. Within ICES, the Microsystems Research Cluster shares knowledge and resources and provides awareness of the breadth, quality and quantity of microsystems related research.

 

Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone (DG-FEZ) - Daegu-Gyeongbuk Free Economic Zone (DG-FEZ) is a Special Economic Zone that has been in operation since 2008 in South Korea. At its 10 locations (34.1 km2) in Daegu-Gyeongbuk, DG-FEZ provides factory, R&D and business space for IT, Green Energy, High-Tech Transportation Components and Knowledge-based Service companies. As a government agency, the DG-FEZ can offer customized financial incentives (tax reductions, cash grants) and relaxed government regulations to its resident companies.

Wireless Integrated MicroSensing & Systems (WIMS2) - The mission of the Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSensing and Systems (WIMS2) at the University of Michigan is to advance the design, fabrication, and breadth of the applications for sensor-driven microsensors and systems through research, education, and interactions with industry. These technologies include: micro and nanoscale fabrication, micromachined RF filters and resonators, packaging, power harvesting, low-power circuitry, and wireless interfaces with applications in biomedical devices, chemical and environmental sensors, and infrastructure monitoring. The applications’ focus and interdisciplinary nature distinguishes WIMS2 from other university research efforts. The relevance of this research is shown by the 12 start-up companies and 60 patents the Center has generated over the past 11 years.
