The wild popularity of smartphones, tablets, video games and other consumer products may be making the MEMS & sensors industry boom these days, but it’s applications in sports that have both professional athletes and sports enthusiasts truly excited.

MEMS & Sensors Industry Group (MSIG) Executive Director Karen Lightman wanted to share the critical role that MEMS and sensors play in sports equipment with the wider world. The editors of IEEE Spectrum -- the flagship magazine and website of the IEEE, the world’s largest professional organization devoted to engineering and the applied sciences -- loved her vision for a related article. And that article, “Silicon Gets Sporty
,” is the cover story of the March 2016 issue of IEEE Spectrum!

From boxing and baseball to running, ski jumping and rowing, MEMS- and sensors-based sports equipment and apparel are changing the ways in which we analyze our performance so we can gain that competitive edge, or at least, boost our fitness.

MEMS and sensors also have the potential to improve concussion detection in children and adults. That subject is especially close to Karen’s heart -- as she first began thinking about MEMS and sensors in sports in 2013, after her younger daughter sustained a serious concussion while skiing. You’ll read about that in the “backstory” -- which appears at the front of the magazine.
